One of my favourite breakfasts is a simple soft boiled egg on toast…

Thank you to our dear friend and food lover Julian @castagnabeechworth for the recipe.

From the fridge into a pot of boiling water for 7 minutes 👌. My egg prick I bought on our last trip to Sydney (in 2019!) from @accoutrement_ is probably my best kitchen purchase in years! No more exploding 🥚 😁

Thank you to our friend Sarah from @breakingbread.bakery for this Country Loaf, available from @othernesswines in Angaston. A fantastic new addition to our beautiful village. Coffee, bread, wine and now food prepared by another of our wonderful & talented friends @therealsamsmith !! Jump online and book a table, pop in for a coffee or a glass of wine and pick up a loaf of bread, you won’t regret it!

Owner of Otherness Wines, Grant Dickson is running Riesling masterclasses, sure to be an amazing experience, all details via their website.

The countdown is on till we reopen but for now we are enjoying having the weekend off in particular, to take the kids to sports, visit the @barossafarmersmarket , do some gardening after this first drizzle of rain…. all the things. Time for another coffee X

Our oven is still on strike so Matteo made this delicious Pollo alla Cacciatora for dinner tonight! After weeks of salads, grilled meat & fish it was lovely to have something warm and slow cooked.

Always keen to make as much as he can in one pot at home, this was perfect, (not many dishes to wash) especially compared to when I cook, which he does like to point out …. 😁

We have started planning our reopening this week, the painters have been in to freshen up the kitchen, repairs & maintenance being carried out, lists being made, phone calls to suppliers… see you on the 5th of February ❤️

Officially relaxed!!!!

Thanks to the crew at The Boatshed for allowing us to take our @pikeswines Riesling, ice bucket and glasses to the beach before we came back for dinner tonight. The forecast tomorrow is windy & cloudy so we are going to make the most of the beautiful warm weather until the sun goes down.

So far we are 2 puzzles in & up to the 11th James Bond movie, so I’d say we have a few more on the cards for tomorrow… exploding kittens card game on repeat and a few rounds of Rubamazzo (Italian cards) so far…

The kids and I have been loving early evening swims at Office Beach, Wallaroo.

The weather seems to be calmer, with only a few people in the water and the temperature 👌. Once we have finished in the water they change to skates/roller blades and make the most of the flat paths along the beach!

Celebrating 47 laps around the sun today with swims in the sea & some delicious champagne tonight.

More importantly toasting tonight my dear dear friend Rosi (Rosa Castiello) who we met in Parma not long after I arrived in Italy at their (Rosi & Gianni’s ) restaurant Croce di Malta.

One of the most beautiful people I’ve ever met. Rosi introduced me to the pure beauty of simple, quality produce & the importance of provenance, and was also an amazing support from afar once we opened Casa Carboni.

Before they moved to Portugal a few years ago Rosi & Gianni were helping teach refugees the skills to work in the kitchen so they could find paid work in Italy.

Taken too soon, One in a million x

After a few loads of washing and a quick re-pack, we headed towards the York Peninsula today. We had an afternoon swim then off to find the fish shop! JJ’s Copper Coast Seafood, this delicious squid was cooked exactly how he suggested: egg, flour, milk & bread crumbs. With a simple salad was 👌

Time to read that book I’ve been carrying around for many months, board games, perhaps some puzzles, apparently a lot of James Bond movies as we brought the DVD’s with us, breathing in the sea air and relax. X

After dropping the kids off for their 6.30am team meetings & warm up before the pool gates opened I absolutely loved my walks along the river in Renmark & watching a few broods of ducklings with their very protective mothers ❤️

Travel essentials! Big thanks to the team @arrosto_coffee for the swim coaches & parents daily coffee runs in Renmark SA to help the early starts!!

It’s times like these my tin collection comes in handy!

Mamma Mia!! Super ripe Riverland 🍑 peaches have been the most delicious daily staple here in Renmark! It’s possible I have eaten my weight in them thanks to Foodland stocking local fruit 😬…

Lunch today (made in our hotel room) takes me back to Summers in Italy with an Insalatona !! Which literally translates to a big salad, and was always a refreshing change in Summer from the insalata verde (green salad leaves), and insalata mista (a mixed salad with only a few ingredients) you are most often see on menus when travelling around.

An insalatona can be loaded with mostly raw vegetables, lettuce, rocket, cucumber, grated carrot, fennel, tomatoes, celery… (pretty much what ever is in the crisper that takes your fancy!), then add anything from tinned corn, chickpeas, fresh mozzarella, tinned tuna to hard boiled eggs…

Finished with good extra virgin olive oil & vinegar, seasoned well with salt and pepper 👌

First batch of Pesto alla Genovese for the season..

Now that the garden has recovered from the early season feasting by the creatures of the night - it’s all systems go!

We substitute pine nuts for walnuts or almonds which are grown in SA & we find much easier to digest.

These Cuore di Bue tomatoes are not homegrown, but I look forward to the @barossafarmersmarket reopening so we can secure some locally grown deliciousness!!
